Renewable Energy

North Sea Energy Gateway is at the very heart of the renewable energy industry. The region has a strong focus on the energy transition and the sectors that are going to be able to achieve it, including offshore wind, tidal energy, gas storage, geothermal and solar parks.

Den Helder is particularly well known for being at the forefront of the tidal energy sector. Not only that, ECN is here and wind turbine testing facilities are nearby. Everything needed to develop a successful renewables business is at hand.

Decommissioning

Many Oil & Gas facilities are nearing the end of their lifetime or are no longer economically viable. Den Helder has been an established hub for the industry for 40 years and has a vast network of more than 200 supply companies, including specialists in Plug & Abandonment services.

North Sea Energy Gateway’s suppliers can take care of the whole process - from preparation through to removal, transport, disposal and responsible recycling - resulting in a seamless and cost efficient decommissioning process.

Geographical position

Our geographical position is the primary gateway to the North Sea

Den Helder has been recognised as a sheltered haven since Napoleon times. In the last 40 years it has grown to become an important offshore hub for the Central and Southern North Sea.

Additionally, with the close proximity of the port and airport, Den Helder offers many advantages:

  • Fastest sailing & flying times to 155 production platforms and wind farms (including future planned wind parks).
  • Direct deepsea access.
  • No locks.
  • No tidal restrictions.
  • Just over an hour from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (the main international airport in the Netherlands) on the train and by car.
  • Offshore workers can fly in from Aberdeen or Esbjerg, arrive in Amsterdam and be at the quayside or the heliport in just 1.5 hours.
  • Direct charters into Den Helder Airport from the main offshore centres.
  • 30 to 35 flights a day to around 155 production platforms.
